ABOUT SANDI SAYER
My paintings explore emotions, memories and experiences that can be difficult to put into words. Making art gives me a way to express these things visually through colour, texture, layers and marks, without needing to explain or define them.
I work intuitively in mixed media, building each painting gradually through layers of colour, texture and mark-making. Acrylics, inks, pencils and handcrafted collage papers are applied, obscured and revealed as the work develops. I rarely know exactly where a painting will lead when I begin; instead, I respond to what is happening on the surface and allow the work to evolve.
Abstracted landscapes, fragile botanical forms and fragments of the natural world often emerge along the way. Rather than simply representing what I see, they become a way of exploring memory, vulnerability and the emotional traces left by our experiences.
I am drawn to surfaces that reveal their history. Layers remain visible, imperfections are allowed to stay, and marks from earlier stages are often left partially exposed. These traces are important to me. They reflect something of the way our own experiences accumulate — some remaining visible, others becoming buried beneath what comes later.
Although each painting begins somewhere personal, I don't want to tell the viewer what they should see or feel. I hope instead that the work leaves enough space for their own response, perhaps prompting a memory, an emotion or simply a feeling of recognition.
For me, that quiet connection between the painting and the person experiencing it is what matters.
Sandi Sayer is a self-taught mixed media artist originally from London and now based in Wiltshire, England.
Having lived in several countries across Europe as well as different parts of the UK, Sandi has long been influenced by a sense of place, changing landscapes and the memories we carry with us.
Over more than a decade, she has developed an intuitive, highly layered approach to painting, experimenting with acrylics, inks, pencils, collage and papers she creates by hand.

Her work moves between abstraction and suggestion. Landscapes, botanical forms and fragments of the natural world frequently surface within her paintings, becoming a visual language through which she explores memory, emotion and the vulnerabilities and imperfections that connect us.
Each original is created slowly and individually in her Wiltshire studio. Her work has found homes with collectors both in the UK and internationally.
